Districts of Laos

When Xaisômboun special region was eliminated in 2006, I made some changes to HASC codes and serial numbers. When it was restored in 2013, I didn't undo the changes immediately, but now I have.

The secondary administrative divisions of Laos are districts. A map can be found on page 15 of this excerpt from an Atlas of Laos . I've found several sources with lists of districts, but they differ slightly from one another. The following list includes all the different districts from all of my sources.

Change history:

  1. ~2000: According to Socio-economic ATLAS of the Lao PDR, Section A: Geographical Overview , the following districts were created: Muang Et and Sop Bao in Houaphan province; Xaiphouthong and Phalanxai in Savannakhét; Hinhurp, Keo Oudom, and Mad in Vientiane province; and Thongmyxay district in Xaignabouri.
  2. 2004: Longsane district (former HASC code LA.XS.LO, serial number 1802) merged with Hom district in Xaisômboun special region.
  3. 2006-01-13: Xaisômboun special region split up and merged with Vientiane and Xiangkhoang provinces. I assigned new HASC codes and serial numbers to the affected districts. Hom, Phun, and Xaysomboun districts went to Vientiane province; Thathom district went to Xiangkhoang. I temporarily gave them HASC codes and serial numbers as follows: LA.VN.HO, 1011 to Hom, LA.VN.PN to Phun, LA.XK.TH, 908 to Thathom, and LA.VN.XS, 1012 to Xaysomboun.
  4. 2008: The above-cited source says that another district was added, but without specifying which one. Other evidence points to Xaychamphone district in Bolikhamxai province.
  5. 2013-12-31: Xaisômboun restored as a province. I haven't been able to get any details, so I've assumed it took the same borders that it had in 2006, and restored the original HASC codes and serial numbers.
