Zones of Ethiopia

A report  on the website of the Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia shows populations and areas for the primary, secondary, and tertiary subdivisions of Ethiopia. (See Regions of Ethiopia for more details.) It shows Ethiopia divided into eleven regions, which are subdivided into 63 zones, which are further subdivided into 529 wereda. However, there are five "special wereda" listed under Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples zone, that don't belong to any zone. Also, Harari region and Dire Dawa administration don't have any zones under them. In the table below, I have grouped the five special wereda together into a single listing, and listed Harari and Dire Dawa as if they were zones.

Change history:

The latest previous information I have for secondary divisions of Ethiopia comes from a book titled "Administrative Sub-divisions of Ethiopia", Ministry of Interior, Central Statistical Office, Imperial Ethiopian Government, Addis Ababa, July 1964. It has a complete list of administrative subdivisions as of 1964-07-07. At that time there were 14 provinces, 99 awraja (sub-provinces), 444 wereda (districts), and 1,328 sub-districts. Some of the districts did not have any sub-districts. The preface says that the official list was in Amharic. The names had been translated (transliterated?) into English for the convenience of commercial enterprise. There were probably some mistakes in translation, and corrections were solicited.
