Districts of Malaysia

The final 2010 census results have been released. In a few cases they differ dramatically from the preliminary results, by a factor of more than 2. I have replaced the provisional figures with the final ones.

The secondary divisions of Malaysia are daerah (districts). Sabah and Sarawak states are also subdivided into entities called "divisions". Each division is a group of from two to seven districts.

Populations from 1991 and 2000 are proleptic; they represent the present-day districts' areas, not the districts at the census date.

Change history:

For West Malaysia (Peninsular Malaysia), my main source is "Cartographic Frames for Peninsular Malaysia District Statistics 1947-1982", by Courtenay, P.P., and Kate K.Y. Van, published by Malaysia Society of the Asian Studies Association of Australia, Queensland, 1983. I have limited information about the history of the districts of East Malaysia (Labuan, Sabah, and Sarawak).

These were the districts of Malaya in 1947, soon after the formation of the Malayan Union.
