June, 2010

Changes affecting status:

  1. North Korea: Two cities merged with the surrounding provinces.
  2. United Kingdom: Changes to the administrative counties and unitary authorities.

Other data added:

The U.S. government standard FIPS PUB 10-4 has been decommissioned, but there is a new document performing the same function: "Geopolitical Entities and Codes". The countries affected by changes therein are Belgium, Burundi, Ecuador, Georgia, Ireland, Macedonia, Montenegro, Senegal, Tunisia, Uganda, and Yemen.

  1. Cameroon: Added estimated population 2001.
  2. Netherlands Antilles: Added 2001 census results.
  3. Solomon Islands: Added 1999 census results.
  4. Turks and Caicos Islands: Added 2001 census results.
  5. United Kingdom: Fixed a longstanding error: two English counties omitted from the 1974 table.

Secondary subdivisions:

  1. Solomon Islands: Added the list of wards.
  2. United Kingdom: Some districts consolidated.

Changes to site:

Removed dead links from the alphabetical index pages. Link rot is pervasive. There were over 300 dead links over a period of about 3-5 years, and many of them had been "official" websites. I also reversed the columns in the Newsletter table, since most people will be clicking on the most recent months.
